Deserted Medieval Villages

Deserted Medieval Villages

There are around 3000 known deserted medieval villages (DMVs) in Britain: settlements which were abandoned and eventually disappeared almost entirely. We can trace these lost villages through historic maps, archival records, and through the ephemeral remains visible on the ground, in LiDAR survey data, and through geophysical survey.

Uncovering the Tweed has explored evidence for the supposed settlement and hospital adjacent to the site of Horndean Church (now ruinous), and has undertaken topographical survey at Upsettlington.

    Horndean

Geophysical survey and excavations have shed new light on this deserted medieval settlement to the east of the current village of Horndean. More info coming soon!

    Upsettlington

Topographical survey has provided new information about this settlement, perhaps better described as a shrunken medieval village. More info coming soon!
