With a grant from Destination Tweed, Tweedsmuir Community Garden Group was able to build a new hut to host activities and events throughout the year.
Tweedsmuir Community Garden at the Crook aims to create a vibrant and inspirational garden and community space, catering to the needs of local people and visitors. The garden provides opportunities for volunteers to acquire skills, socialise, and contribute to the Tweedsmuir community. Since 2025, a Community Garden Development Officer has been in post, working hard to enhance volunteering opportunities in the garden: coordinating volunteer events, recruiting more garden volunteers, developing a plan for local food production, organising training workshops, and engaging with local schools and partner organisations to ensure that as many people as possible can benefit from this beautiful community asset.
While activities at the garden were very popular, there was no indoor space: nowhere for craft activities or workshops; nowhere for participants could get out of the wind and rain (or the sun!) so that activities could take place throughout the year, whatever the weather. Marquees and gazebos were used instead, requiring much planning ahead and often hire costs.
In late 2025, the Garden Group worked together to build a community hut which could fulfil these purposes, a permanent designated area that can be used spontaneously and at any time, ensuring that activities can continue uninterrupted, regardless of weather conditions.
Despite a weather-related blip – the hut blew down during a winter storm, but was rebuilt stronger than before – the hut is now a key community space within the garden, providing a hub for activities and respite from the elements.
You can find out more about the community garden on Tweedsmuir Community Company’s website:
Total project costs: £4710.00
Destination Tweed contribution: £4381.19 (93%)
One community hut constructed
23 volunteers contributed 70 hours to the project
Hut is used at least weekly by the gardening group, and for additional seasonal/one-off events throughout the year
Despite perishing cold weather volunteers from Tweedsmuir came together to build the shelter. One new volunteer said he’d really enjoyed the day, learnt new skills and learnt a lot about the Tweedsmuir community.
The Community Grants Scheme was made possible by funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund Scotland.
