Join BFT staff to help lay the orchard hedge at Corehead, and learn an important and demanding rural skill from expert tutor Graeme Walker, professionally accredited by the National Hedge Laying Society. The day will run 10am – 3pm, and include a short introduction to hedge laying and tools, followed by preparing, pleaching, laying and building sections of hedge, as well as learning staking and binding under supervision. All tools and materials will be provided: axes, saws, slashers, bill hooks, binders and stakes.
Please note, participants must bring their own chainsaw helmet and sturdy boots (no trainers). A chainsaw helmet offers the best head and face protection in thorn hedges – but a baseball cap/tweed cap or similar will offer some head protection. If you do not have a chainsaw helmet, we may be able to lend you one.
Be aware that hedge laying is a physically demanding craft and carries the risk of injury from thorns and extremely sharp edge-tools. All efforts will be taken to ensure safe practice is adhered to at all times during the course. Trainees must understand that they participate in the course at their own risk and the organisers will not be responsible for injury arising from misuse of tools or failure to follow safe working practices.
