I was born at Castle Hills in Berwick and grew up near the Chain Bridge.
In the summer we would catch minnows in a big empty sweetie jar, which acted as an aquarium! Needless say, the minnows only lived for about a day!
PS There was a shingle beach in front of the Shiel at the bridge, so it was easy paddle in the river there. It’s quite overgrown now.
This story was shared while Tweed Stories was visiting St Cuthbert’s Church in Norham. Find out more about Norham village and church here and all about the Union Chain Bridge here.
