Moonlight cycle, Crownhead Bridge

Moonlight cycle, Crownhead Bridge

Some years ago I rode across the new concrete Crownhead Bridge near Dawyck on my bike. It was sometime around midnight or one o’clock in the morning.

The moonlight was dappling the ripples in the river as I cycled along – it was so beautiful and quiet.

Then suddenly I heard a pitter-patter, pitter-patter…I looked down to see I was being chased by a badger who was running along beside me!

This story was recounted at the Merlindale Nature Festival 2026 near Drumelzier, run by The Borders Meadows Trust. With thanks to everyone there who so generously shared their memories and reflections of the Tweed.
