Reflections on the Tweed

Reflections on the Tweed

I have spent most of my life by the River Tweed. Explored much of it, sailed on it, swum in it, canoed it and nearly drowned in it as a child. Though I have never fished.

I have spent much time looking at the river from a casual glance to prolonged study. It demands your attention when you see it. And every time it’s different.

Different state of tide or flow, different seasonal colours around it and different light and cloud in the sky. And different animals and people doing different things. Yet it has always been flowing through this changing world for all to see and enjoy. Visual and mental reflections the mind and eye can endlessly feast on.

This story was created during the Tweed Stories ‘Writing the River’ online creative writing workshop, held on Thursday 30 July 2026 and delivered in partnership with The Wilson’s Tales Project. With thanks to everyone who participated so enthusiastically.
