Such a familiar journey but always special.

Childhood fun and a good pun with history and mystery.

Read the poem, Royal Border Bridge, here.

The Royal Border Bridge is one of Berwick-upon-Tweed’s most iconic landmarks, carrying the East Coast Main Line high above the River Tweed. Designed by the renowned Victorian engineer Robert Stephenson and opened by Queen Victoria in 1850, the impressive railway viaduct stretches 659 metres and features 28 elegant stone arches. Still in daily use today, the Grade I listed structure is celebrated as a masterpiece of railway engineering and offers a most spectacular view.

This story was created during the Tweed Stories ‘Writing the River’ online creative writing workshop, held on Thursday 30 July 2026 and delivered in partnership with The Wilson’s Tales Project. With thanks to everyone who participated so enthusiastically.
