Icebergs on the Tweed
During the hard winter of 2010 I was driving into Kelso and was astonished to see little icebergs floating down the river! I couldn’t believe what I was seeing, but I think the council was clearing the snow from the roads upriver and tipping it into the Tweed.
An unexpected arrival
We can’t normally see the river from our house, but in 2005 the road outside Stobo was being dug up. There was really heavy rain and a serious risk of flooding – and the river rose so quickly it came into our house!
These stories were shared with us during the 2026 Merlindale Nature Festival, held near Drumelzier on Saturday 1 August 2026. With thanks to everyone who added their stories to our giant River Tweed map.
