Join Dr Coralie Mills, of Dendrochronicle, for a Woodland History and Dendrochronology Workshop at Borders Forest Trust site Dairy Wood, near Moffat.
What will the workshop involve?
Dendrochronologist and landscape archaeologist Dr Coralie Mills will lead a fascinating workshop, demonstrating and exploring how a synthesis of sources including historical maps and dendrochronological (tree ring) analysis can reveal the complex histories of our wooded landscapes across Scotland.
Dairy Wood, a historic wood pasture, on Borders Forest Trust site Ericstane will be used as a case study for how these different strands of investigation inform our understanding of woodland history and how this can help inform future woodland management.
The morning session will be delivered indoors at Annan Water Hall. After lunch we will walk to Dairy Wood for an outdoor session, looking at the process of dendrochronology and what features to look for when considering the history of a wooded landscape.
When and where to meet?
The workshop will be held at Annan Water Hall , but due to very limited parking at the venue a minibus will run from Moffat, for all attendees. Please meet at the Ram statue in Moffat town centre at 9:30am to catch the minibus run by Moffat Taxis (there is free on street parking). If you don’t know Moffat, the ram is a big sheep on a pedestal, you cannae miss it.
The workshop will finish at 4pm, when the minibus will pick up attendees for a return to Moffat by 4:15pm.
What to bring:
Tea and coffee will provided but please bring a packed lunch
Weather permitting we will spend the afternoon out onsite, exploring the historic wood pasture Dairy Wood, which is half a mile walk along the road from the Water Hall. Please dress for the weather including sturdy boots, waterproofs, a hat, suncream, insect repellant, and a bottle of water. Please be aware of ticks, and do check yourself for ticks after the event and remove as per guidance here.
Dairy Wood is on sloping ground, steep in places, and can be wet, muddy and uneven underfoot. The nearest facilities are back at the Annan Water Hall, or by the Borders Forest Trust cabin (about a 10 min walk away)
Tickets:
Due to generous funding we can offer this workshop at a much reduced cost, the suggested donation is £10 per place, which helps us cover the cost of the minibus and refreshments and supports our ecological restoration work. All attendees must book a ticket through Eventbrite, over 16s only.
If you wish to bring a dog please let Cat know on the below email address. Dairy Wood is currently under grazing, all dogs must be kept on a lead in the woodland to protect livestock and wildlife.
