The River Tweed is vital to communities who live along its banks, both past and present. Archaeology is all about people and how we explore and interpret the past through the evidence left behind.
We are delighted to be working with AOC Archaeology Group, who will lead a co-curated archaeology project which will shed new light on the archaeology along the Tweed and its communities.
The project will provide many opportunities for you to get involved: from identifying previously unknown archaeological sites online from the comfort of your own home, to taking part in survey and excavation at sites from Moffat to Berwick.
A major sub-project, Mapping the Tweed, will use LiDAR technology and a citizen science approach. Uncovering the Tweed will deliver workshops to teach participants how to identify archaeological sites from web-based LiDAR mapping. These workshops will be followed by sessions to discuss the identified sites and field visits to some of these locations.
Several other thematic projects will explore a wide range of sites and periods across the study area, including:
These projects will incorporate various elements, from desk-based research and online mapping to field visits, surveys, and 3D modeling. Techniques will include geophysics, excavation, artefact analysis, and historic building recording.
