Crossing the Tweed – Research Workshop

Discover the History and Evolution of Tweed River Crossings

Join AOC Archaeology for an engaging workshop introducing Crossing the Tweed, a fascinating sub-theme of the Mapping the Tweed project. Explore and contribute information on how bridges, fords, and other crossing points along the Tweed River and its tributaries have shaped communication routes and landscapes throughout history.

Workshop Highlights:

  • Introduction to Crossing the Tweed: Learn about the project’s goals and the importance of mapping historical crossing places.
  • Case Study Presentation: Examine an example of how crossing points reveal insights into historical landscapes.
  • Interactive Resource Training: Get guidance on using the Crossing the Tweed webmap to record and share your findings.

Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a researcher, or simply curious about the region’s rich heritage, this workshop offers an opportunity to contribute to uncovering hidden stories of the Tweed.

We are looking for participants to share information on the theme of crossing points along the Tweed. For example:

  • Family recollections of using the fords and ferries
  • Information on access to the railway.
  • Usage of the river, and features on the Tweed that relate to it.
  • Personal research and experiences on the Tweed that you are willing to share.
  • Have you identified any possible now forgotten crossing points?

Over the coming months we will collate the information onto a map which displays the results of the project investigations!
